Today I started my preop diet. Let me tell you, so far I do not like pre-made protein shakes. I’ve only tried two brands, and I will get to that but first let me explain my pre-op diet and reasoning behind it for those of you who don’t know about the process.
When having gastric bypass surgery, they do it laparascopically. For those of us who are grossly overweight, our livers are usually very big too. In order to make surgery easier on everyone involved, following a very low carb diet for a couple of weeks beforehand forces the liver to use it’s stores of sugar and reduce in size. This reduces the odds that the doctor will have to move the liver more than necessary to do the procedure. So I’m on a diet of two protein shakes a day, along with a meal of 4 oz of lean protein and 2 cups of veggies (excluding any starchy veggies like potatoes, peas and corn). The “meal” can be any of the daily meals it is not limited to the evening meal. I’m also allowed 3 small snacks a day also of high protein food like jerky, cheese sticks, ect. Of course the day before my surgery I will be on a strict clear liquid diet like any other surgery.
So far I’ve tried two of the most popular brands of pre-made shakes, and let me tell you, for ME personally they are not very good. It’s because they are very chalky. I did try blending it with ice but that really just made it worse. I do have some powder to use to make my own shakes, along with some recipes that were given to me by friends for things they liked to try, but I’m trying to get rid of the stuff I don’t like first the principal that I hate wasting money.
I have a couple of “before” photos to show here now, they are NOT good photos, I just took them with my phone in my daughter’s mirror because I don’t own a full length mirror. Also please excuse the mismatched shirt/pants, I wanted to pick something I will be able to show later on down the line for reference.
Here’s my front view (Garrosh is not approving)
Looking at the front view, I don’t seem as overweight as I actually am. Now take a peek from the side:
That is not “oh you just had a baby” weight. My youngest child is turning 10 this year.
The distribution of my weight is also important when looking at my overall health. People who carry weight like I do are more likely to have heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. So far my heart is still healthy!
So I will be having my surgery in two weeks, and it so happens my Birthday is about 2 days before my surgery. My husband states “you’re giving yourself the gift of health this year”.
